Stubby the Rocket launched Tor.com 11 years ago today, on July 20, 2008! And after last year’s raucous 10 year birthday party we’re really looking forward to a cupcake or six and a nice quiet year ahea…
Erm, what’s this?
That envelope was definitely not there before.
(The unicorn definitely was.)
We guess it could be a check from mom and dad, which is nice. We’re 11 so who knows how we’ll cash it, but…woah.
WOAH.
MINERVA.
We suppose a rocket landing in Diagon Alley probably wouldn’t be the weirdest thing that happened there…
Wait.
This explains a lot.
We’re off to school! We’re going to be so good at Magical Creatures, you guys.
….
How’d the owl get in here?
So, will this site only be open during summer holidays? And the Magical Secrecy Act will keep you from sharing “stuff” with us Muggles who never got a letter. Sniff! Well, Happy Birthday, anyway. I’m not jealous. You’re jealous!
Why does everyone associate your 11th birthday with your Hogwarts letter? Harry got his letter on 24th July, his birthday was 31st July. Hogwarts letters are all sent out at the same time, in the summer of the year in which they would be 11 before midnight on 31st August. The exact date the letters goes out varies year on year in the books.
Omg how envious

Happy Birthday
That is so cool!!!
Congratulations, Stubby, for your birthday as well as for the letter! :)
I would have thought that more of those textbooks (if not all) would be in new editions by now. Putting out a new edition every year is how textbook publishers make money, after all.
Muggle publishers want to make money, wizards probably still copy books by hand.
So, Stubby, will you report on which house the Hat puts you in?
Happy brthday Tor! I think I first found this site around 10-11 years ago (I remember it was early into my tenure at my current job) so I guess I’ve been here nearly since the beginning :)
Lisamarie – you were definitely here near the beginning, since I remember you from when I first joined!! For me, I think it must have been late ’08 or early ’09…when I was first discovering Wheel of Time and when I searched for an internet WoT community…got directed here to Tor somehow!! I didn’t realize I was here in the first year of the site though. =)
I’ve lived in several different countries and worked several different jobs in the past 10 years…and still checking Tor almost every day…even though I confess I’m not as active now as I used to be!
Sonofthunder – ha, me too! I remember I was looking up the old WOT FAQ to see if it had been updated, and ended up finding that it had been moved to one of the fan sites (Dragonmount, I think), and while I don’t think they ever updated it, they mentioned that one of the original contributors was doing a re-read here. I am pretty sure I was on a business trip for one of my first customers.
